Department of close reading

Yikes, I missed something important.

Jennifer 8. Lee’s January 16 post about the New York City bed bug seminars:

Since July, the city’s 311 hot line has registered 4,000 complaints about the nocturnal blood-sucking creatures, 1,700 of which resulted in violations issued to building owners across the city.

That is a much more brisk pace, even compared to the previous 12 months, which resulted in a total of 2,000 violations.

Yes, considerably brisker. The gap between complaints and violations is closing. These numbers indicate a 13-percentage-point increase in the verification of complaints from 29% in fiscal year 2007 to 42% as of January 2008.

(Please remember, this is private residential tenants; we’re talking 311 complaints and subsequent HPD investigations and violations. Private residential tenants, it must be added, who call 311 to complain about their landlords not helping them eradicate bed bugs, not to report bed bugs. This distinction is lost on some people.)

Our RSS feed. If you're in NYC, check out our bed bug task force campaign. And, hey, we hope you don't have them (anymore, ever).
