Bedbugger checks on the status of Michael Gianaris’ bed bug legislation
April 12, 2008 by Renee
Bedbugger has an update on the state legislature bill which would require parental notification of bed bugs found in New York City schools.
An update and a call to action:
Tell senators on the Education Committee that the bill matters because as the information on A6667b provided by the Assembly states, “Currently, if a bed bug is discovered in a school, only the family of the affected child is notified. Additional notifications are left up to the discretion of school health officials.” Tell them that requiring principals to notify parents promptly about bed bug infestations at school and requiring them to provide information about preventing the spread of bed bugs will help keep bed bugs out of our schools, and will also prevent other New Yorkers from suffering from the cost and pain of removing them from their homes or workplaces. Minimizing the spread of bed bugs helps everyone in New York State.
Please check all the useful links Nobugs has assembled to all the key legislators.
The Gianaris bill was passed in the New York State Assembly last year by a vote of 134 to 0.
We can convince the esteemed Senators of its importance. That is a reachable goal.
Please write those letters. One letter at a time, one issue at a time, until we have a comprehensive set of policies in place to fight bed bugs. Thank you for your support and interest so far.

Thanks, Renee. When that bill was passed by the assembly the first time, a lot of people thought that was success! But it was just a first step towards success.
I hope readers will (anonymously!) tell us they wrote their assembly members!
