The pigeons were breeding there and leaving droppings, etc. The mites from the pigeons got into my apartment and on my body. It has taken me seven months to get rid of them. I am refusing to pay rent during that time because my apartment was not habitable. I was force to stay in my apartment as I could not afford a hotel, my family lives too far away, and my friends were afraid that the bugs would end up in their apartments since I had them on me. My entire life was derailed. I could not work...all I could do was de-bug my apartment and body. I would start at 4AM in the morning and go until 12 to 1AM the next morning. The bugs were bad enough but the attitude of my building management was even worse. I am rent stabilized and this was the perfect opportunity for them to try and drive me out. It has cost me $17,400.00...more than my entire year's rent. They are suing me for nonpayment of rent. Court date is 3/16/10. They are not willing to negotiate...they are ruthless. They apparently came from an apartment that shared the wall with me I later found out from a retired super who lived in the building and knew that they guy next door to me moved out due to a bedbug infestation. For four months they grew in numbers and would regularly feed off my girlfriend and occasionally me if she was not present. By late July early August it was out of control they took over the room and would eat us alive so badly that it affected our work days from insomnia and itching and would keep us waking up intermittently at night. Building Management questioned the presence of bedbugs then fought paying for treatment of their apartment. We finally got someone after a week of being persistent. By that time it was too late, we already would find them on our couch and on our clothes. This was too much we had to throw out all of our wood and material based furniture & move out two months early since we could not live anywhere in the apartment without being eaten alive. Now Building Management wants us to pay the last two months but we are contesting due to the fact that we don't believe we should pay for a place we could not live in.
