We are working on finishing our policy recommendations report, a document which we’ll use to request help, to present to legislators, to publicize our cause and to educate everyone about the policy solutions we believe are feasible.
We hope it will describe the extent and features of the bed bug problem, the landscape of other cities’ actions to control the spread of bed bugs and will provide recommendations—every single sensible thing we can think of based upon careful research and sound advice. This will show policy-makers what is actually possible as well as garner wider support for our cause. At least that is the game plan.
If anyone is interested in providing a short quote about their personal experience of bed bugs for use in the report, it would be greatly appreciated. This short personal statement would not identify the person making it except by a first name and last initial. We are fully aware of the concern for privacy and we share it ourselves. Let us know if you are interested; you can write to me at renee at newyorkvsbedbugs dot org.
We will also later prepare materials to help you reach out to your legislators.
I’m actually feeling hopeful about our project! If I sound optimistic, it’s because we’ve recently had the benefit of very smart, very generous advice and we actually think we have a chance, with very hard work, to persuade those who would listen to help stop this insect, this ancient bed bug, from ruining our city. (I wish that were an overstatement; it is decidedly not.)
I just checked our tally and we’ve collected 83 letters so far in support of our bed bug task force campaign. (And we have reason to think there are many of you who are writing and calling on your own.) A heartfelt thanks to all of you who are writing letters and making calls. You are rock stars.
We really do wish to have your feedback and advice.
Please feel free to let us know what you think.
