Franklin County is not just talking. We discussed their newly formed bed bug task force just the other day it seems. Now we have another Columbus Dispatch story about bed bugs in Franklin County and another chance to read between the lines and try to figure out how in the world we can get us some of this whatever it is they have down there:
Trying to avert a bedbug epidemic, the Franklin County Board of Health established a central Ohio bedbug task force. Its job is to keep an eye on the bedbug population, discuss how to handle complaints and inform the public.
It will meet Wednesday and plans to talk about what schools can do to keep bedbugs out and how to deal with them when they come in.
How effortless.
But, eyes ever trained to spot difficulty, it does look like the Franklin County Board of Health and Columbus Public Health won’t be compadres in the fight against bed bugs in the manner of Cincinnati/Hamilton County. Columbus Public Health demurs:
Columbus Public Health, for example, hasn’t taken a strong stance, [Ohio State University entomologist Susan C. Jones] said, because bedbugs don’t transmit disease.
“I think they’re just asking for trouble,” Jones said. “By taking a hands-off approach, they will be drawn into this way too late, when the bedbug problem has exploded.”
Dr. Jones, Dr. Jones. We’re just going to have to steal that.
Get with the program, Columbus… trust us.

too late. it’s already exploded, it’s already too late. will it take a politician who actually has suffered through an infestation him or herself to really bring about some new policies?
Hi Ashleigh-
The only NYC pol who might be a candidate is Marty Markowitz!
But I hope it’s not too late. It will be very, very difficult.
and he’s an ‘almost’ victim. ha!
