Theresa,

What is the name of the company that made the beds they claimed were bed bug proof? Sounds like you have yet to replace your beds but are gaining ground through more effective pest control treatments. We are not there yet but hope to be in the near future. Thanks for your help.

hi greg,

we actually looked into beds (can be made into bunks) that stated they were bed bug proof, they're made of a hard plastic/metal combination. for 18 beds we figured the cost to be 7,000.00. needless to say we have yet to purchase them. another type of frame we checked into are the ones they use in jails and prisons. again not homey but i believe it beats getting bit by bed bugs.
at times it feels as though we're never gonna win this battle, very discouraging. as of the last treatment we have yet to see live bugs but i personally am not getting my hopes up.
if there is anything else i can help you with i'll be more then happy to try.
good luck in your battle

Theresa, I work for an agency with a large emergency shelter in Seattle. I'd be interested to see what bunks you ended up purchasing for replacement of the wooden ones. We have the same dilemma with wooden bunks that, despite numerous treatments, are very infested. Thanks much.

we've actually thrown out a lot of our wood bunk beds and replaced with flat (not tubular) metal frames. not as homey looking but also not a lot of crevices where the bed bugs can hide. pest control people were wonderful yesterday, sent 2 techs, an entomologist and the dog guy. very impressive to observe, dog found bugs in rooms (we have 6 apartment type units) that we weren't aware had them and residents were not complaining of being bit.

Thank you, Theresa. I will contact you.

Someone told me about a shelter where they were using varnish on wood furniture to seal it off. Other furniture must be such a challenge. I hope other options will be more affordable eventually, like thermal treatments.

Thank you again, I will be in touch.

hi renee

sorry it took so long for me to get back. well as far as our challenges, at first we thought we had fleas, had a local pest control come in and treat for fleas a number of times and still people were getting bit. finally we caught one, called our local pest control company, yes they tell us we know how to treat for bed bugs - not. they used talstar on one trip and i can't even remember the name of chemicals used on trips 2, 3, 4 and 5 maybe even 6. no luck with this pc co. so we contact a company in columbus, yes they say we treat for bed bugs and we've had a wonderful sucess rate, they too send 1 tech (for both companies we did all alot of the work, ie flipping mattressess and box springs.) they come down 2 times, still we have bed bugs. on trip number the tech tells us our living room furniture really needs tossed, it's only 18 months old and still haven't replaced it. finally in desparation i emailed dr. jones, i believe the subject of my email was help us please. she followed up with an email and then we talked on the phone. that's how i found out that the 1st two pco's didn't know what they were doing. she recommended varmint guard and they do know how to treat for bed bugs. they treated at the shelter 3 weeks ago and while we haven't seen the nasty things in droves we have caught 4. they are coming back tomorrow with a canine. i am hopeful. this has been very costly, so far $7,000. and we haven't even replaced furniture.

if you would like to talk to me at length i would welcome the opportunity. i think the more people work together on this problem well the better it might be.

any more questions please feel free to ask;

That's what we figure from this great distance, Theresa.

Thanks for your comment. I hope the bed bug situation at the shelter is getting better. If you see this, I'd be interested to learn about your challenges and your control efforts in the shelter.

Best wishes.
